East Hampton residents go to the war of renewal of local gunshine lease

The owners of East Hampton, New York, are struggling to prevent a popular local guidance club from reopening, years after the precinct for the claims that lost bullets fired by members had struck local houses.

It seems that some owners of the East Hampton Wainscott community are not happy to have their home in the range, that is.

Several residents of the Path Merchants district launched a lawsuit against Maidstone Gun Club in 2022 after reporting that lost bullets hit their homes.

The guns club, which has been in the area for 42 years, argues that bullets did not come from their installation, but from people who illegally fired in the forest that surrounded the property.

However, this litigious presentation provoked a temporary containment order ordered by the courts in November 2022, forcing the gun club to cease all operations from that moment.

However, the topic has become leading the local debate in recent weeks, as Gun Maidstone’s club may be ready to reopen soon.

The club’s 30 -year lease – for which $ 100/year paid for the use of 97 hectares of park near East Hampton airport – experienced more than a year and a half ago. Due to pending demand and renegotiations, a new lease has not yet been signed.

But, in the hope of reopening the club, which is considered as a range of “everyone” features that serves the community and also to the application of local law, the city of East Hampton and the Maidstone Board are explaining the details of a new agreement. However, some owners in the area are still in the arms and try to block the renewal.

The question now is that a guns club and an elite neighborhood can learn to live in harmony?

Members: It is not just a guns club; It is a legacy

In an area that is most often associated with society elite, the Maidstone Gun Club has always been proud of the fact that it is not unique or high -end. With annual dues with only $ 150/year, the guns club has roots in the 1930’s in Hiding, New York, incorporated as a profit in the 1950’s and landed at its current location in the 1980’s.

At the time of the transfer of the guns club to the Wainscott area near the East Hampton airport, the idea was that the club was not “out of the way” because no one else was around.

According to reports at the East Hampton Star, the club was excited to move to the area with the city that offered a low rent as a “elegant solution to a problem: to move a” noisy “guns club next to an airport and an industrial park.”

However, in recent decades, the demographic changes around the property where the guns club is located have caused new problems.

What was once “out of the beaten path” is now surrounded by East Hampton’s faces that are often sold for millions of dollars. So, although the club still has a low profile, the neighborhood of the surrounding area is definitely not.

There are currently three listings for Wainscott Properties, with prices more than $ 10 million at Realtor.com®, although the price of the median list in the neighborhood is $ 3.7 million.

In the meantime, East Hampton currently has 13 market homes for more than $ 20 million, and the latest median list price is $ 2.95 million in the sky in April 2025.

Home Owners: Don’t go firing around the neighborhood

In August 2022, workers in the construction of a House of Merchants Path said that they felt that the balls trembled on top. The surveillance cameras captured a bullet that struck the roof’s shingles as workers ran to cover.

As a result of this incident, and others that were intended nearly from 2004, seven owners of the Merchants Path area filed a lawsuit against the Maidstone Gun Club, which is located a few kilometers from their neighborhood.

Although the gunshine club argues that bullets did not come from their installation and were probably the result of people who illegally shoot at the almost 1,000 hectares of park surrounding the club, they closed immediately voluntarily after the incident.

According to an article in Air Mail, however, a report from the East Hampton police department in 2023 concluded that there was a “great probability” that bullets had been diverted from the club’s outdoor rifle range, through safety barricades that were launched to stop them.

Whether the bullets came from the club or elsewhere, but with more than 90 homes now in the area along with businesses and schools, including a preschool at less than a mile away, members of the community argue that the guns club does not take place in the neighborhood.

There have been angry councils and the continuous calls of the residents worried that the club be closed permanently.

Proposed Solutions: Looking for a way forward

From the “Incident”, the following demand and the multi -year closure of Maidstone, members of the guns club have been working with the city of East Hampton to find a way forward.

Although it may seem that some efforts to expel the club may also have to do with the desire to take care of the Hamptons “prime” real estate property (there was a proposal flooded to convert the property of the gunshogs club into affordable homes), members of the Maidstone Council say that it was never a realistic option.

“ Sometimes it is difficult to understand the importance of developable land prices in this area over the last 40 years, but the club’s ownership is zoned “ Park & Conservation ”, says Ryan Horn, director of the Gun Maidstone club. “ Not only is it a recreational, conservation and public safety organization as our maximum and best use of property, but also we have exclusively exclusively renewed our renewal contract. ”

The terms of the new lease have not yet been published, but Horn tells Realtor.com® that the agreement between the city and the club will include a massive increase in rent for the next 30 years.

It will probably also include provisions for security improvements, although Horn says it has always been a priority.

“No member of the club or the public has been injured in the 42 years that we have been on the property,” says Horn. “Maidstone prioritizes security and responsibility.”

And, in fact, the Club has always applied strict rules, including members’ training and non -alcohol on the property. In addition, there is absolutely no ammunition of “armor” allowed at the club. In addition, there are concrete safety tubes in which members must shoot their weapons.

“Above what our lease or law is required, we have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on improvements in rank over the years,” says Horn. “We plan to take even further once the lease is signed and the litigation is concluded.”

Recent negotiations seem to indicate that there will also be no outdoor rifles allowed once the range is reopened, except for the practice of Skeet and Trap, which is an Olympic sport. The club actually helped two students obtain college scholarships in the past coaching -I. In addition, some exceptions for the police are likely to be allowed to use the range to practice free of charge as part of the provisions of the lease.

Although the nearby lease renewal has not yet been released between the city of East Hampton and Maidstone Gun Club, the hope is that it provides protections to the surrounding community, even if it allows the club to exist as a place for people to learn how to use firearms, but will also enjoy the social departure of a long -term community institution.

“Everyone who uses our facilities and many more who want to unite -they expect to reopen,” says Horn.
